NanoReno 2023

I've finally "finished" the NanoReno project, A Witchling Gambit. It's a story kinetic visual novel. Basically so short it's flash fiction. There was more I wanted to add to it later for presentation but simply learning how to put the project together after I wrote the script was an ordeal in itself. Overall I learned quite a bit doing this project and wanted to just say mention some of it.

Writing - While writing the script I limited descriptions what characters did and how they felt and focused  more on what they said. I realized later that I should have been reading aloud as I wrote the dialogue to make sure it sounded like stuff people would ACTUALLY say. Overall it ended up terrible in the first draft and a little better as I edited it. Overall I decided that since the story was short, even if it sucked at least it would be over with quickly.

Assets - I've gathered alot of assets but I had NO CLUE what I needed in certain scenes until actually began to create the game. Realizing I needed more assets or specific sounds, video, etc was a continuous situation. Then it was deciding which assets matched the core of the script and to see if I was willing to change the script to match new assets.

Audio - Audacity helped me heavily. Learning to edit audio assets to match the ideas in my head was pretty great. Also it was easier to change the format ogg or mp3 that Tyranobuilder wanted to use.

Tyranobuilder - The program used to make this visual novel was easy but difficult to learn without the guides. There are forums and videos but much of information is dated. However, it's super easy to learn. I can drag and drop assets to a cascading timeline of events and preview my game from any event point on the timelime. I might continue use but I believe there are other programs better suited for me.
